Despite a long day of travel to Regina, Fraser Valley athletes rose to the occasion on the first day of the inaugural National Championship League, winning both of their games Thursday.
Led by two strong performances by the Aikema siblings (Jordan and Emily), the men’s and women’s U19 squads triumphed over Team Saskatchewan and the Calgary Renegades. The wins count for a valuable three points in the NCL standings, which will decide which teams will play for the national title in May.
Though both matches were close in the early stages, the fitness of the Fraser Valley teams ultimately decided the games. Valley rolled lines through the third and the fourth quarter, pushing the pace of the game and extending the lead – the men’s game finished 17-6 in Valley’s favour, while the women’s side finished 10-5.
Competition continues throughout the weekend, as the Fraser Valley teams look to extend their early success. Meanwhile, Fraser Valley’s dedicated support staff are doing their utmost to ensure our athletes are primed for competition. Big thanks to Madeline Aikema and Leanne Martel for their invaluable contribution to our athletes’ success.
