The pride of British Columbian water polo was on display Saturday night, as three Fraser Valley teams faced off against their cross-town rivals, Pacific Storm in back-to-back-to-back fashion.
The U16 boys game kicked off the evening. It was the first taste of National Championship League action for the young Fraser Valley team, and the boys took a couple minutes to find their form. As Storm jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the match, the Valley squad settled in and battled their way back into the game with three straight goals of their own in the second quarter.
The game finished 15-9, after strong performances in net from Kyle Bos and Sasha Kruglikovskiy. Other standouts from the FV team included Spencer Devitt and Riley Bennet, who tallied five goals between them from the centre forward position. Rookie Dawson Kampf was also impressive in the match, surprising those around the deck with his considerable speed.
Valley's U19 women followed the boys match, in what was the game of the night. A hard-fought, back and forth affair came down to the final minute, as both Fraser Valley and Pacific Storm had one offensive possesion to try and earn the winning goal. Valley's efforts in the final minute came up short, and a shot from the outside found the back of the net for Pacific Storm with ten seconds remaning. Valley was led by veterans Paige Bennet and Emily Aikema, two standouts from Valley's campaign last year in the NCL.
The final match of the evening, in the U19 mens category, proved to be the most lopsided match of the night. Valley's squad comprised a number of U16 players alongside a shortened roster of the U19 men, and inexperience and fitness played a role in the outcome of the game. Though the FV team stayed even with Storm throughout the early going of the match, the attack eventually gave way to a Storm victory. Eric Martel and Ashton Erickson put in strong performances for Valley, who will be looking for a measure of revenge next time these two teams meet.
